It would be nice to have a SQL backend. We have about six (6) users, and if one makes a change, all the changes someone else has done will not be saved....or if he exits and saves, it will over write the previous persons work. Not that changes happen that much, but it does creep up now and then......

I think this would be a great version for Corporate version of S-Code VNCmanager down the road. But it would also cause lots of more problems in the future...

SQL backend support is coming in the v6.0. It’s required for some of the new features that we are planning to include in the v6.0 release. So this feature will be implemented for sure.

Is there any word on when a beta of 6.0 with SQL support will be released? We have been trying to implement this software for some time now and we cannot as it is way too slow. Our XML database is huge as we have literally hundreds of servers and customers listed.

Thanks!

We have already started working on this feature. We will be keeping support for XML files and adding support for SQL backend.

V6.0 will introduce so called Management Profiles. They will allow an administrator to create any number of different configurations (XML or DB) and switch between them.

Talking about the timeframe, I think we are still at least a month away from releasing a public  beta build.

If you have any ideas or feature requests with regards of the SQL backend support, please do send them to us.

The way the VNC Manager loads the data will be changed in the v6.0.  Pre-v6.0 builds load all the registered files in memory. In case of 200-300 registered computers it’s not a big deal. But when you have thousands of registered computers the things might start looking ugly.
There are two problems:

  1. Parsing of XML files is a relatively slow operation
  2. Holding thousands of registered computers in RAM will cause the vncmanager.exe process to use large amounts of RAM.
How this problem will be solved in the v6.0 (this applies to both XML and SQL configuration profiles):

  1. The VNC Manager will load into RAM only registered computers that are needed to complete current operation. For example, it will only load registered computers for currently selected folder.
There are couple of scenarios when all the registered computers will have to be loaded:
    • You have Scan All Registered Computers at start-up setting enabled
    • When using Quick Search with “Search Subfolders” setting turned on.
  2. In case if you only manage Active Directory computers you might not need to use Registered Computers at all. In the v6.0 it will be possible to link an Active Directory as part of the Groups Tree.  So basically you will be able to browse AD’s organizational units as folders and assign settings to computers the same way you were doing it with Registered Computers. The VNC Manager will be able to fetch the setting even if you move a computer between OUs.
