Screen Display Cleanup - Some suggestions

I happen to use the 120dpi setting in Windows (XP, latest sp) and multiple monitors, and have noticed the following
(please take these as constructive suggestions)

a) When one uses the Windows 'Large Fonts' setting (120 dpi) Some of the dialogs do not display correctly.
In particular, the checkboxes in some dialogs are overwritten by an icon on the left, almost to the point of not being able to be seen.
For example, for a specific computer, Properties =>Remote Client=>VNC=>Settings the icon for each section overwrites the checkbox
Also, some textbox areas are not big enough for the text font (in particular, the above example the Remote Client leaves out the last 't')

b) Options => Tools => External Tools => Tools : the add/edit/delete is shifted upward

c) Pop-up Dialogs (like Printer Manager) do not appear in the same monitor as the primary window (and thus not 'centered' on the primary form)

VNC Manager Lockups

I am currently on VNC Mgr Enterprise v4.5.3.0 but I have been experiencing this problem for the last 3-4 releases.

Sometimes when launching a VNC connection from "My Registered Computers", the tab for the PC will appear but then nothing else happens. If I wait for maybe 15-30 seconds and then click on the tab, "Not responding" will appear on the title bar and I then have to "End Task" on VNC Mgr. I can then re-launch VNC Mgr. and generally I can then access the PC that I tried to access and locked up VNC Mgr previously.

When I check the Event Log I see the not too helpful Event ID 1002 ...

Hanging application VNCManager.exe, version 4.5.3.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

Another thing that regularly locks up VNC Mgr (say 3 out of 10 times) is doing a shutdown on a PC that you are accessing via VNC. When this happens, it requires an "End Task" to proceed. The other 7 times, the tab will close and everything works as it should.

We use UltraVNC v1.0.5 installed from the UltraVNC installer.

Menu Bar Location

In version 4 if I say move the Menu Bar (Manager Actions View Tools Window Help) to say vertical down the side when I next reload the program it stuffs it back at the top. Version 3 was able to remember the location of the bar. Could you fix this please ?

Computer Status Updater hanging when it scans my UPS

I have Eaton Powerware UPS's here. When VNC Manager (4.5.2.0) tries to scan it, it just hangs. It would be real handy if I could control what kind of scan VNC Manager tried to do by group or by device.

Main Toolbar Closing

In version 4 you appear to not be able to completely close the main toolbars. This function was available in version 3 and something I used a lot. Could you please re-add the functionality to remove these tools when they are not needed ?

some time ago I tested the VNC-Manger Enterprise Edition v3.6.20.0 and everything was fine. I made a backup and after I bought a license I installed the newest updates to v 3.6.23.0.
Since then the download volume of this pc went up to 3-8GB per day although I didnt make any changes to the VNC Manager. We have about 40 PCs in the Thumbnail View and I set the update of the view to 900 seconds as well as the screenshots which are in very low quality and use only about 300MB per day.
Now I changed the version back to v3.6.20.0 but still the download volume is about 7GB per 24 hours.

There are no viruses on the pc and nothing else is running on this machine, no other downloads.

The other thing is: The thumbnails dont refresh themselves after 900 seconds, like I set it. Only after pressing F5, but thats no solution at all...

Are there any wrong settings, how much download volume do you have, please help me!

Delete key behaviour inside registry editor

I opened one of my users workstations registry and start poking around. Cruised to the run key and found a bunch of stuff that I don't approve running. So I highlighted 8 of the 12 keys and hit the delete key. To my surprise, they didn't get deleted but the folder with all the users workstations did. Thank you for the automatic backups of my configuration. It really saved me but its really annoying to have to do this.

Dynamic Search Folders not scanning correctly

I have 7 dynamic search folders set up to scan each of our OUs for computer accounts. Until a synchronisation feature comes out for the My Registered Computers section, this is the best way I can do this I believe?

I have one of these folders set to retrieve MAC addresses (my local subnet only), and the rest not to.

When I run a network scan, VNC manager picks up the first active computer and puts it in the list, but for subsequent computers it does not - it even seems to overwrite the details (like the AD description field) for the first computer in the list (including retrieving a MAC address for DSFs that I have set it not to). End result is I only have a single listing in the DSF with incorrect information (MAC address & description). The name, address & IP are correct.

I also have a question/suggestion while I'm at it - is it possible to scan multiple OUs with a single DSF, or provide some sort of facility to do this? Our servers range through a variety of OUs, and even different domains.

[FIXED] Change default port in deployment package

We tried to deploy UltraVNC 1.0.4 R16 through deployment wizzard. Everything worked fine, except the setting for the server port. We do not use the default port 5900 for our servers. Although we change this setting in the wizzard, the server is running with the default port 5900.

I don't think this is necessarily a bug with VNC Manager, but I was wondering why when I scan for computers, the old computer name shows up instead of the name I changed it to last month.

"Too many security failures" with RealVNC 4.1

I've downloaded RealVNC v 4.1 Free Ed. and installed it on a Win2000(sp5) server to test it. Initially everything worked fine but then I started getting the error message "Too many sercurity failures. Do you wish to attempt to reconnect to 172.16.1.20? Yes/No". I found that it never works to answer yes, regardless of how long you wait for the security block to time-out. The only thing that does work is killing the VNC service and then restarting it.

I finally removed v4.1 and re-installed v4.0 and the problem stopped entirely.

The reason I'm posting this problem to this forum is that I am using VNC Manager v2.5.73 and I have VNC set to check for server status every 15 minutes. I'm also using VNC authentication for access. Is there a chance that VNC Manager's status checking is somehow triggering RealVNC 4.1's tighter security?

For reference, here's a reply regarding the problem when I posted a question regarding this to the RealVNC discussion group. In particular, the last paragraph suggesting non-authenticated communication between my PC and the targer server.

Bob,

"Too many security failures" indicates that the IP address from which you
are connecting has been making lots of connections to the VNC Server that
didn't end up being successfully authenticated.

This is a security feature designed to prevent dictionary attacks on
servers, by preventing machines from making large numbers of connections to
a server over a short period of time.

The message is triggered by 5 failed authentication attempts, at which point
a 10 second lockout is applied before the next attempt is permitted. The
next failed attempt causes the timeout to be doubled.

Given that (I assume) you are seeing this message in spite of supplying
correct credentials each time you try to log in, and that once you see the
message you never again get the chance to enter a password, it sounds like
something is connecting to the server from the same IP address as your
viewer machine and is not authenticating, hence causing the failures.

VNC 4.0 was less secure in this respect, by default, hence the different
behaviour.

SmartCode VNC Manager no longer opening

When I open Smartcode VNC Manager I get an error message "Smartcode VNC Manager has encountered a problem and needs to close." I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling same problem. Win XP and Smartcode has been working just fine for several months. Any idea what is causing this!

Uninstall from 3.6.19.x throws error

We deployed UltraVNC from version 3.6.18.x to clients throughout our enterprise - also using the uninstall feature. We recently upgraded to the new version, 3.6.19.x. Now, we receive the error,

when trying to uninstall a version which was rolled out using 3.6.1.8.x. This happens on all of our machines.

We were told by tech support to ensure that firewalling was off, ports were open, etc; we have group policies which ensure none of that is a problem.

We didn't do any kind of original exotic deployment - everything was very straight forward.

File Transfer Error SC UltraVNC 1.0.2 - 4.0.1.0b

Hi All,
we've recently purchased SC VNC Manager with the intent to use it across our 700 PC Enterprise network.

At the moment we're testing the software with some select PC on the domain.

I'm using SC VNC Manager version 4.0.1.0b and are having trouble specifically with file transfer.

Each server is configured to use VNC Authentication, not NTLM, rolling out Smartcode UltraVNC 1.0.2 is fine and browsing the computers seems to be okay.

The problem is when I open the file transfer, it briefly says 'Connecting...', but then throws up an error message;

VNC server address: x.x.x.x
rdr:SystemException: read: Unknown Error (10054)
[ OK ]

When I click okay it closed the file transfer and the viewer....

I've tried looking the settings, the default ntlm credentials are set and working (rolling out and uninstalling are okay).

This one's got me stumped, any suggestions..

Both pc's are running xp SP2.

Smartcode VNC Manager 3.6.24 constantly forgetting passwords

We have the latest version installed and have pushed out the clients to about 50 or so pc's already. We set the same password for each pc to keep it simple. When we try to connect from the domain list on the left, it will quite frequently say there is no password set, please reset the password, this has to be done quite a bit, not sure why it is not remembering the password on the client pc. Any help is appreciated. thanks.

[FIXED] VNC window fails to show scrollbars

I have a strange problem I've noticed for the last few weeks. When I make an initial connection to a VNC server, the view window doesn't show scrollbars (even though there is insufficient vertical space and part of the screen is cut off). Once I disconnect, I am able to reconnect and the scrollbars appear as they should.

Missing computers from Domain List

I have an unusual problem that seemed to show up with my last upgrade. To connect to my average user, I use the list located within entire network -> domain. This has been working well for me, I only have about 75 desktop's in the list. When computers need more help, I have a folder for working computers under registered computers that I drag computers there for quick access. In the old version I was able to remove computers from this list without effecting my entire network -> domain list. However it seems that after the upgrade, when I remove computers from this 'working folder', they remove themselves from my domain list as well. This is becoming a problem - has anyone else seen this? I am seriously considering trying to go back one version. :angry:

I was connected via rdp to current secessions and then I connected via vpn and then the scession's were un avaible I tried to enable and touch it but I recived and error so I closed the rdp secssion and then I recived this error.

Could there be better error handling for this version for this type of problem.

Out of some 10 servers, I have about four that, when I create a thumbnail view and/or full screen VNC connection, both will crash after a random amount of time with a box that states "SmartCode VNC Viewer (yellow triangle with !) VNC server address: SERVERNAME. rdr::EndOfStream".

Immediately afterwards I can reconnect with no problem, but after another random amount of time the same issue always occurs, and always with the same servers.

No commonality between breaking servers, that is different from the servers without the issue. I have uninstalled previous VNC clients and re-installed the SmartCode VNC built-in RealVNC on all servers so all are configured identically.

Just upgraded to 3.6.21.0 and will see if that helps. Previous version was 3.6.19.1.

VNC Manager Crashing

VNC manager keeps crashing. No set amount of time but always when I am working. It can set idle for days, and then work for a few minutes and then crash. The error that I am getting is:

So far today it has crashed 4 times. Also I have upgraded several times and the problem seems to keep rolling along with me. It started with version 3.6.16.0 and has lasted to the newest 3.6.19.1.

FIX: VNC viewer crashes when running in the stretched mode

The fix resolves two issues:

VNC viewer crashes when "Screen Stretch" mode is On
VNC viewer repainting problems when "Screen Stretch" mode is On

To apply the fix please download the following file:

Close the VNC Manager if you have it running.
Copy the file to the VNC Manager installation folder. (Default: c:\Program Files\SmartCode Solutions\VNC Manager (Enterprise Edition))

If you had the above described problems, please let us know if how the VNC Manager works with the fix applied.

Application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect

Im getting the error when I try to run the enterprise or standard demo "Application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem"...I have tried reinstalling but nothing works.

Constantly forgetting passwords

I am finding that VNC Manager does not like to save all the passwords.

I set a password for a group and set all the machines within it to use the group password.
They then switch back to "this computer properties" seemingly at random.

Also, if I set or change a password for a given machine, sometimes it will forget it, or go back to the previous password.

And finally, though far less frequent, the SSH tunnel password will be forgotten too.

Running VNC mgr inside of VNC mgr RDP session is very poor

VNC Manager 3.6.16.0

When out of the office, I use a Verizon broadband wireless card to run a VNC Manager RDP session to a system at my office. Within this session, I run VNC Manager on the system which is in the office to connect to other office servers (mostly RDP).

The problem is that I experience very poor VNC Manager performance. The screen fails to update after I do something usually until I move the mouse outside of the remote VNC Manager window. Often, the toolbars of the VNC Manager go blank and do not come back until closing the app and re-opening it. Basically the product I purchased is unusable in this scenario. I would expect that things may move slowly due to the wireless speed and latency, but it's much worse than that.

I do the same exact things with Microsoft's free Remote Desktops mmc console (which I don't like) and everything draws just fine inside the remote office system, so I know this issue is coming from VNC Manager.

I think someone from s-code told me this is due to "infragistics"? Anyway, it's still not fixed and I would like to know when it will be? I am very happy with the product when not running VNC Manager inside of another VNC Manager.

Version 3.6.16.2 ask for Password during startup

when i have one vnc connection in thumbnails with a parent group setting password and close and start vnc manager i got the password dialog for this connection but i think vnc manager should take the password from the conections parent group setting.

Version 3.6.16.2 crashes nic interface in win XP sp2

when i running vnc manager over some hours the nic connections fails to all lan connections and the taskmanager shows no activ lan connections. Deaktivating and then activate the lan connection does not work. restart windows is required.

Vista Support ?

I see before that when Vista was bought up you said you'd look at it when RC1 was about. Guess what was released yesturday. Well I for one would love to be able to use it on my Vista machine, so when does the debuging start ?

Right now it loads fine but when you try to connect to any RDP client you get the following error -[code]Unable to get the window handle for the 'AxMsRdpClient' control. Windowless ActiveX controls are not supported.[/code]

smartcode focus on taskbar, but not in foreground

Sometimes the Smartcode application is running and shows as focused on my Windows taskbar, but its behind other windows on my desktop. I have to either bring something else into focus, then go back to smartcode, or click the smartcode task a few times to minimize and re-maximize it to the foreground. It only happens with this application.
Annoying.

compuer domain problem... bleeding over from other servers?

I have a LONG list of servers. The first second one the list is in a domain called ABLWCPAS. This domain is specified in the properties.

Some, around 40 percent, of my other registered servers will try to log in as ABLWCPAS\Administrator and the specified password for the CORRECT account. Which leaves me having to change the login information under "RDP options" I have to change the username to DOMAIN\Administrator

Has anyone had a similar experience? Is there a fix?

Corrupt Video Hook Driver installation via deployment wizard

I'm currently evaluating VNC Manager (Enterprise edition) for use in our server environment.

We are using a mixture of HP Proliant servers including a C class bladecenter.

When I use VNC Manager to push an installation of UltraVNC to a server, the video hook driver doesn't install correctly. Even though the deployment wizard logs no errors during the install.

If I launch the Service Helper, right click on the icon then go to properties, the first thing I notice in the "WinVNC: Current User Properties" dialog box is that the "Video Hook Driver" box isn't checked, even though in the deployment wizard I told it to do so. If I check this box and click "OK" then go back into the properties it's unchecked again.

Additionally, if I click on the "Check Video Hook Driver" button I see that the version numbers for the 3 components listed in the "Driver Test" dialog box are garbled. You can see a screenshot of it at this link: http://epic.shellfx.net/~bitbyte/vnc.jpg

If I go in and manually run the driver installation batch file in the UltraVNC folder, it fixes the problem. But it's hardly a good solution for deploying to 150+ servers. I get this problem on all of the server types I've tried it on. Additionally, if I do a manual install of UltraVNC using the software downloaded from UVNC, it works fine.

I've tried this same process using both versions 3.5 and 3.6 beta with the same result.

Bandwidth issues

I have VNC v3.5 install. Currently using it to monitor 15 computers. Theses 15 computers are not on local LAN and are all located on remote WAN connections with limited bandwidth.

I want to monitor these 15 computers using thumbnail view. I set the settings to get a updated view every 900 sec (every 15 minutes). for some odd reason, the software is still taking up about a consent 200K bandwidth on my WAN. The bandwidth increase as I add more computers to the thumbnail view (or decrease as I remove each computer from the thumbnail view). The refresh time setting does not seem to affect the bandwidth at all. Looks like the software is constantly connected to the remote compouter instead of checking every 15 mins. Did I do something wrong? Any solutions or setting I should apply to decrease the bandwidth usage?
